Watched Play "Todd, The Big Green Frog" with Sri and Raghav.

It's about a big heavy frog who cannot jump. He was teased by fellow frogs and had no one to play with.

Todd was upset and decided to leave home for good. Just then the crocodile came and wanted to eat the frogs.

Todd came to their rescue and save the day!

The frogs began to play with him and even got him a cricket to jump on!

When we arrived, there were barely any seats left. Fortunately, we managed to get front seats for our two boys. Sri and I then sat at the back.

Photography wasn't allowed during the show, hence I took some pictures before the show began.

Took one picture too when I saw some snapping and video-taping away during the show.

I was told politely not to take pictures. Ooops, sorry. Anyway it was a blurry picture of two frogs and I had deleted it away.

During one of the scenes, the frogs were playing hide-and-seek.

The frog that seeks suddenly tapped Keane's shoulder and shouted, "Catcha!"

Keane was shocked, "Hey! I am not a frog!"

The audiences laughed! I laughed too. Keane was so cute!

Keane's first swimming lesson.

Background:

Initially we enrolled Keane with another instructor recommended by Sri.

But just as fate would have it, we met swimming coach Kian Hoe at the pool on 20th March. It was just a very brief encounter but that had already left Keane an impression.

When I told Keane that he will be taking up swimming lessons, he asked me,"Is it the handsome kor kor ?"

"Nope. I replied. "You will be joining Raghav and it's another coach."

"But I want the handsome kor kor!" He pleaded.

"Huh? Then you won't be learning swimming with Raghav!" I warned.

Keane kept silent for a moment. He thought hard.

Finally, he made up his mind, "I still want the handsome kor kor."

Hmm... I discussed with hubby and we decided to repsect Keane's wishes.

Note: kor kor means brother.

Today is Keane's first swimming lesson.

Before this, I was told that some kids actually cry during the first lesson and could even went on for months.

Hence, I was mentally prepared that Keane will scream his guts out today, and I even made up my mind not to be soft-hearted!

However, what awaited me was a pleasant surprise. He didn't cry.

In fact he was very happy to be in Kian Hoe's class. I am so glad that we respect his decision!

The one hour class soon ended and Keane was already looking forward to his next swimming lessons.

Aa - Art for Autism

Pathlight School Art Exhibition

(1-3 April 2011)

Brought darling Keane to the Pathlight School Art exhibition today.

Prior the exhibition, I've told him bout Autism and the art pieces we will be viewing later are works by talented Autistic students. I wanted him to look and observe the pieces so that we can talk about them after the exhibition. He obliged.

When we reached there, we were greeted by a very warm-hearted security guard at the gate. As we proceeded, young friendly ushers approached us and explained the exhibits to us. Keane immediately clicked with them and followed them through the exhibition hall!

Much as I wanted to, photography is not allowed. Hence I can only took pictures outside the exhibition hall.

The exhibition showcases works of 8 talented Pathlight students, who had capture the world with their keen observation and deliver them through their ability of narrow focus. I especially love the myraid of animals in vicarious situations, "I Want to be Included" by Tay Jun Yi, a 15 years boy. It clearly shows his yearn to be with people, but due to his condition, he rarely takes the initiative to partake in social interactions.

As I had expected, Darling Keane's favourites are the range of "Assimilated Robots" by Elliot Chia, also 15 years old. Keane also loves the featured collection of "Microsaurus" and "Dinosaurs Galore" by See Toh Sheng Jie, 14 years old. "Golf Story" also caught Keane's eyes. Simple yet highly narrative, these pictures were by Deniel Abundo Tuazon, 9 years old, the youngest of the 8 Pathlight students.

Through this exhibits, I've gained a better understanding about Autism and the ideals of Pathlight School. I was also amazed by their sharp and meticulous observation skills as well as their sensitivity to details. I hope today's trip had also given Keane a better insight on drawings too, which I think it did because Keane told me he wanted to draw what he saw at the exhibition today! \(^o^)/

Hop opens today!

Hubby bought tickets for the movie at Shaw Cineplex, my favourite cinema in Century Square; the seats are bigger (thus more comfy) and lesser people.

Keane asked me, "Will there be other people watching the movie too?" He still remembers that there were only 2 of us in the movie theatre when we watched Mars Need Moms.

"Yeah, because it's 7 pm and everybody's off work and school. " Keane seems more assured and relaxed to hear that!

Borrowed a Chinese book about the birth of a baby from the library.
We talked about how he came to this world. He listened intently as I read the book to him and he asked many questions after that. I answered to all his doubts. :)
When I was done with it, he still holds on to it and keep looking at the pictures.

Today is a very packed day for Keane!

We left the house at 8 plus in the morning for breakfast.

Our first stop was the WTS roadshow and a skit by local artistes, one of which is Chen Hanwei.

There were booths for hands-on workforce skills qualifications training, interactive stage activities, a mini magic show and games.

We took the MRT to our 2nd stop - Amazing Africa, a 2 days event (26 March and 27 March). There were many performances and kids activities: Pulse of Africa (taditional drumming and dance), African Acrobatics, Tales of Africa, Treasure Diggers, African Cave Paintings etc. Starbucks Singapore were also there to teach coffee tasting techniques and free coffee samplings. You can also get your hair braided the African style and paint your face the African way. The performances were mesmerising and I especially love the Tales of Africa, a story-telling session by Gcina. She was very animated and she has an amazing voice and charisma that drawn everyone to her! The morale of her story - Children are the stars around us and should be treated with Love, Respect and Compassion. I'm so glad that I brought darling Keane here and it's even more gratifying to see darling Keane engaged and engrossed in the whole event! We could practically spend the entire afternoon here! But well, we didn't as we have one last stop in today's agenda. Anyway, we spent almost 5 hours here already, and had done everything. q(^o^)p

Last stop was dinner with my parents. Hubby picked us up after we were done at the exhibition. My mum bought Keane a Pokemon cards which Keane has been yearning for. Of course Keane was excited! After dinner, we went to Bedok Point for window shopping and supper.

It's been a long time since I felt so fulfilling!

SK Open House

Today is the first Open House of SK in 2011.

Very excited. Wanted so much to see Keane's class, his works and of course speak to the teachers.

I spent quite a long time talking to both Keane's English and Chinese teachers. I just want to be more involved in Keane's learning journey.

Keane's focus.

While Keane's attention span seems to be rather short in English lesson, his attention span in Chinese lesson is good. On the other hand, when I gave Keane lessons at home, Keane is able to sit down for an hour, sometimes even more when he's doing crafts with me. Hmm...

Keane's motor skills - climbing up and down of stairs.

Hubby and I don't think it is too much of a problem because we know Keane can climb stairs consecutively. Just that given his meticulous nature and height (he's short...), he tends to be more careful as he cannot reach the steps easily. However, Chinese teacher said Keane has already shown much improvement in climbing up and down of steps.

Other concerns had also been raised up, but nothing is more important than Keane's happiness. Keane loves SK and his teachers. Besides we hope that he can learn and grow in our founder's school.

Brought Keane to the library. Xinyu went too.
Read four books together and went back home.
When we reached home, Keane said, "Mummy, it's not raining, can we go to the playground ?"
I obliged, "Of course, I have the same thought too!"

Today, Keane made another improvement by trying the twisting slide!
He played the slides many times and also made friends there!

Brought Keane to the movie, Mars Need Moms, with only the two of us inside the whole movie theatre!

It feels goooooood! Like I booked the whole theatre!

This is also the first time I bought a ticket for Keane as he now exceeds 90cm! Keane used to sit on my lap when we went to the movies, and now he shall sits on the booster! Good boy!

After the movie, Keane returned the booster to the staff and said, "Thank you for the movie!"

The staff laughed!

I asked, "What about me? I paid for the tickets!"

Keane answered, "I know! I love you! Thank you!"

Parent and Child craft

Today's the due date for Parent and Child craft for Chinese Lesson.

Fortunately, the craft had dry up over the night (see yesterday 7 March entry)!

Ever since I learnt about the Parent and Child Craft, Keane and I had been discussing and brainstorming on the craft. I wanted to do something different, not the usual crafts of robots, planes, houses, pencils/pens holder etc. I want the craft to be unique and original, and of some use; not just some deco or ornament.

Finally, we decided on making the trophy.

Keane was very happy to have his first trophy even though it isn't real!

As I said, I want it to be of some use, hence at the back of the trophy,

we made a drawer for Keane to put things like clips, erasers etc.

Mummy, I have a trophy now!

Playdates with Raghav at Explorerkid again today!

It's our 3rd visits and it's obvious that Keane is getting more comfortable with the mega playground and all.

Most importantly, he's enjoying himself!

I think it's money well-spent and worth the effort.

I'm so very grateful towards Sri!

We went to EK late and ended late today because I had tuition in the afternoon.

Darling Keane was tired by the time we reached home, but knowing that we still need to finish up the final touch his Parent & Child craft, he stayed up to help sprinkle the glittering glue etc.

Well done, darling Keane!

Went to the zoo this morning! Keane was excited to visit the zoo again!

Our last stop was the Kids Rainforest, so that he can cool down in the water playground before going home.

By the time we left, Keane was so tired that he didn't want to move!

Keane was elated to go to Explorerkid again!

Keane is, by nature, a meticulous boy. I thought it'd do him good if he goes there often.

I read somewhere to respect strong dislikes and fears in kids, and hence I reflected on the way I reacted when Keane refuses to play slide.

In fact, Keane started to refrain from playing slide after he witnessed a boy fell from the slide and suffered cut lips.I reminded myself not to rush him.

Thanks to Sri, Keane explored the top of the mega playground, and after a few times, he's willing to do it on his own! Sri also slided down with Keane in her arms for a total of 3 times.

Although Keane is still reluctant and afraid of sliding on his own, I confident that it's just a matter of time that he will do it. Meanwhile, I must not insist or force it on him. It will only backfire!

Keane and I sat the ferris wheel after that.

I started to feel fear... It seems that as I grew older, I beginning to fear heights.

I was in fact chanting in my heart as I sat in the ferris wheel... It's ironic that I used to play slides, roller coasters etc when I was young... but now, I wouldn't even want to try them...

We also went to NTUC to buy bread, nutella and drinks as our stomachs were growling!

And we ended up having a "picnic" by the Ferris wheel!

We were supposed to visit Keane's paternal grandparents this afternoon, but as hubby was feeling lethargic, the visit was postponed to next week.

I then brought Keane down to play badminton and the playground to kill time.

Keane sat down to see his toys brochure after a game of badminton.

Nevertheless, I think at least it is great that he made an effort to sit on the slide.

He slided down once with my help...

And now is his 2nd attempt without my help...

While I was giving tuition, Keane requested mother to bring him down to the open space playground behind our house for a badminton game.
I spotted Keane and mother running up and dow the stairs of the pavilion behind our kitchen windows.
When they came home, mother said they played the badminton and the playground, then Keane suggested running up and down the stairs together. Haha~

Friday is here again!

Keane looks forward to Friday because I told him that I will try to arrange playdates for him on Fridays if there's nothing on, and if he behaves well.

After school, he cooperated by bathing and eating his lunch. We also finished up his homework.

Yali will not be joining us today again as Xinyu is coughing quite badly. Hopefully he will get well soon!

Liu Jin suggested Ikea, our boys can go to Smaland while we can have tea at Ikea Restaurant.

I agreed since I need to redeem my Ikea bonus points before it expires this end Feb.

Later, we also went to Giant where Liu Jin's hubby looked us up. We took a ride home in their car.

Keane has another fun day, another happy memory added. \(^o^)/

Today we went to Ikea Tampines with Yali and her son Xinyu.

After much persuasion and assurance, and seeing that Xinyu went into the Smaland, Keane finally agreed to go in. Even though we went to Ikea several times, this is the first time that Keane enters the Smaland.

Darling Keane, there's always a first time, and it is much easier when he has a friend to go in with him.

Kids really need to mingle with other kids; the smiles on their faces when they are with their peers is so real and so different compared to the smiles when they are with adults.

Xinyu warmly welcomed Keane when he finally enters the Smaland!

Today after school, we went out with Keane's last year Nursery classmate, Raghav and his mum.

Before we meet them at Explorerkids, we had lunch at TM foodcourt and happened to see the Lion dance performance at one of the shops.

Keane enjoyed himself very much today!

I simply love to see him laugh so heartily with his friends. \(^o^)/

While the kids were having fun, Raghav's mum and I were also chatting.

We talked about the loneliness a single child faces. But we also agree that nowsaday some siblings don't click; they treat each other as thorns their flesh! I have students who dislikes his younger brother and sister!

Most people also thinks that single child is more selfish compared to kids with siblings.

Both of us beg to differ!

It really depends on how the child is brought up. In fact, kids with siblings may tend to be selfish because he/she has had enough of sharing or giving his/her way to the other siblings.

Hence, how a child is being taught and brought up determines the character, not whether the child has siblings or not. It's a good feeling to know that Raghav's mum shares my thought!

I signed Keane up for the Surprise Corn Flakes cookies workshop organised by Bakerzin early this January. Although we can do it at home but I thought it would be good and fun for him to bake with other kids at times. Keane waited enthusiatically for this day to arrive. \(^o^)/

After the workshop, he asked me when I will sign him up for another one. I promised him I will if he's a good boy. Haha!

It's been a week since school reopens.

I asked Keane how he felt and whether he makes any new friends.

Keane said there was no hugging, and most of his friends went to different classes, only Erica, Jin Hyeok, Kit Yang are in the same class as him. He don't know the other friends' names yet.

Keane also said he missed Kevin, "I wonder how Kevin's doing."

"Didn't you see around in school?" I asked.

"Yes! I saw him today, and he waved at me, calling my name!" Keane laughed.

Dear son, you will make new friends as you grow older.

Make new friends with an open heart and keep the old friends in your heart. \(^o^)/

Blur mummy brought darling Keane to school today, only to realise that school begins tomorrow...
Fortunately it was Hubby who drove us there and hence we did not get caught in the rain.
Keane was delighted to learn that there was no school; he wanted to go Central with us for breakfast and grocery shopping.
He was chatty and sang songs when we left his school, a total opposite of the way he behaved when we drove him to school earlier. He still needs a bit more of time to get use to the fact that school has re-opened already. :)

For Soka Kindergarten, the first week is the school orientation period.

Hence for this week, Keane only attends school for 2 days (yesterday and the day after tomorrow).

We spent our morning having breakfast at Wang Cafe, followed by a walk around the malls and the bookshop.

On this last day of 2010, we went to Gymboree with my brother and wife and big sis.

Thereafter we proceed to my in-law's house and had dinner together. My parents came too.

Big sis will be flying back to Shanghai the following day. Hope to see her back in SG again soon.

Hubby's big sis is back from Shanghai.
We went to visit her and had breakfast together in the morning.
It was quite a brief meeting as we still need to go home for Keane's power nap, so that he will not be cranky for tonight 80th Anniversary General Meeting at SIS.
We will be visiting big sis again on 31st Dec before she flies away the following day.

Didn't take alot of pictures for this event because firstly, we were pretty far from the stage (my camera is not very good), and photography is not allowed. Hence I only took a few pictures at the beginning and ending... Anyway there were many pictures shared by fellow members and performers in Facebook, and I shall just take a look over there. =)
I must say that it was really a great performance put up by all the performers. I'd definitely love to see Keane up there one day too. =)

Mini Graduation Concert

Batam Trip

(20th December to 22nd December)

We went to Batam for a short trip (3 days 2 nights) this time round with his colleague + family.

Just as well, this December holidays were pretty packed and we can't go away any longer than that; 23rd Dec will be Keane's concert, 25th Dec is SSA 80th General Meeting at SIS and 26th Dec is the entrance day. Hence a short getaway is better than nothing.

I have never been to Batam while hubby had been there twice for his company's retreats. We hired a driver so getting around was not much of a problem.

Actually there are quite a few places of interests such as the Tua Pek Kong, Vietnamese Refugee Centre etc, but we didn't go there as our main motive there was R&R as well as shopping, and time was really not enough. Hubby said we'll go there again on our own next time and will go to those places that I wanted. It's ok anyway, I'll just tag along.

We stayed at Holiday Inn Resort Batam and it was really good. As it is a resort, there are many facilities such as spa, gym, children's playground, pool etc. Didn't really make full use of the facilities due to tight schedule... Quite a pity... Bu well, at least Keane had fun with Aini and Aida, and that's the most important.

Today is our niece, Evalene's birthday...

It is also hubby's colleague's wedding and another colleague's daughters birthday party...

As hubby had already given his words to them months back, we missed our niece's one year old birthday celebration =( ... Anyway, wish our dearest niece a very happy birthday and may she stays healthy and adorable always. We'll be visiting her again soon.

In the afternoon, we went to Blk 888 for the wedding lunch, therafter, we proceeded to Yishun to Kamar's house and then to Macdonalds together where Kamar's daughters held their birthday party.

Mr Oon visited Keane today again for his assignment.

Hope Keane is of some help to him...

Keane treats Mr Oon as a friend, he was very relax in front of him; he played, laid down etc... We didn't want to put on a false front too, so we still told Keane off when he behaved badly.

Mr Oon commented that Keane is very different at home. Yes of course... it's only natural right...?

Kids know that's their home, so they are definitely more unrestricted and relax; they feel safe to cry,and display their emotions etc.

As long as he doesn't go overboard at home and obey the school rules and teachers, that is not a problem. =)

In fact, I want Keane to feel relax at home, I want him to feel loved, thus when he grows up a teenager or adult, he will still likes to be home. I know teens who doesn't feel the warmthness of a home; they dread going home and stay out till very late... that's really very sad...

Today is the last day of my Dec one week Compo class.

After the class, I quickly changed Keane and we went for lunch at Macdonalds, catch the Teen Titans show and then proceed for his Stories and Craft.

We also treat ourselves for donuts and bought some books before heading home. =)

I wanted to refuse initially, but then I remind myself not to be quick in saying "No" .

I thought : Ok... it won't be there after X'mas anyway, so why not just let him be?
Hence, we hopped onto the sleigh happily, again.

2nd last day of my Compo class.

Keane was playing with my mother while I taught, hence he didn't take his power nap.

After class, had quick early dinner and then rushed to Keane's class.

When class ended, went to Bread Talk to buy him some bread then rushed to TSC for chanting for our MD leader, Mr Tan, who had met with an accident.

Darling Keane was very tired already by then... I was afraid that he will be cranky over there, but I quickly remind myself cannot have negative thoughts. After chanting for a solid 1 hour 15 minutes, we left before Mr Chan finished his encouragement; we still need to walk back and that's about 25 minutes walk.

Keane was very cooperative, he did not ask me to carry him, we talked and sang as we walked.

We came across a stray cat walking by the side of the drain, Keane suddenly said, "Mummy, I'm scared."

"Huh? Why? What happened?" we stopped walking.

"I'm scared that the cat will fall into the drain..." he answered.

"Oh..." I heaved a sigh of relief... I must admit I felt a stir in my heart when he said that... "Don't worry, it won't fall into the drain."

"It will get up by itself if it falls, right?" he asked.

"Uh-huh..." we continued to walk.

"Nobody help the cat up when it falls, it had to get up on its own..." he sounded sad.

"Keane keane... don't worry about the cat... It will be all right... Just chant whenever you are scare, ok?" I told him.

He nodded.

We were walking home when Keane called me to stop.

He spotted a snail near the bus stop(again... he always spot insects, ants and creepy crawlies on the ground...).

"Mummy look! So cute!" he said as he kneeled down to take a closer look...
I let him examined the snail and took some pictures.

"Let's go home... Very hot!!" I finally said, fearing that he will request to bring it home.
If you have been following this blog, u will know that we ever had a pet snail but it died in the end!

"Mummy..." he began.

"Cannot bringing home!" I interrupted.

"It won't die this time, I promise!" he begged.

"How do you know?" I asked.

"I will chant for his health... and I will be gentle!" he continued.

I refused.
An auntie waiting for the bus to arrive heard our conversation...
She asked me, "You going home or what?"

I answered,"Home... Just right ahead."

"Then bring home for him lar!" the auntie sounded as if she's going to scold me...

"I have no plastic bag to catch it," I tried to find an excuse.

"I have!" she said as she digged out a plastic bag... She removed her umbrella from it and without saying another word, she bent down to catch the snail with it...

Keane was elated, "Auntie thank you!"

"Good boy!" auntie replied smilingly.

I stood there not knowing what to do...

Keane held the plastic bag with the snail in it, and with the other hand he held my hand, "Mummy let's go home and give the snail a home too."

I looked at his contented face and relented...

Just then the bus came for the auntie to board. I quickly thanked her and walked home with darling Keane...

The snail was eating the leaves we picked!

While I was giving my Dec composition course today, Keane went to my parents' house.

He came back with this G.I. Joe hat. He loves it and said it's an army hat.
He also took out his long gun to play shooting.
After he had his fun, I took the opportunity to tell him about War and Peace.
I explained to him about the importance of World Peace, and the negativity of War.
War brings nothing constructive at all. It destroys homes, trust and love.
Keane then asked me about the North and South Korea War we saw in the News. (He will watch News with me sometimes if he hasn't sleep yet and I will tell him what happened around the world)
He asked, "Why is there war if it is bad?"
I told him the greed and anger inherent in human beings causes war.
I added, "Sensei said, 'Nothing is more barbarious than war.' "
He then told me matter-of-factly, "Mummy don't worry. I'm just playing shooting, not going to war."
"I know, darling. Just want to tell you the importance of World Peace." I kissed him.

After our conversation, I visited the washroom. I heard Keane chanting when I came out. I immediately grabbed my cam and rushed out to the living room to film him. I dare not go close in case he stops chanting upon seeing me... I sneakily zoomed on him... Of course he still caught me in the end. He smiled at me and I joined him in chanting. =)

I was preparing lunch and Keane was left alone to play.

But there was no sound... so I went to check on Keane...

He was engrossed writing and looking at the book, totally oblivious to my presence.

He only realised that I was standing there when I snapped his picture.

He said, "You finished cooking? Come and do with me!

We visited the library and bookstores most of the time during this December school holidays...

Luckily though, he enjoyed going to all these places too. =)

I suddenly remembered what my leader, Lixiang, shared with me about having abundant good fortune.

She said one WD used to work in one of the shops in Toa Payoh.

As no one looked after her son, she left her son at TPY Library while she worked...

This WD would then picked her son up after work and went home together.

Her son, thus spent hours reading books in the library almost everyday, he did not have tuitions nor attend any enrichment classes. This boy eventually became a scholar.

Lixiang continued to explain that if this WD and boy has no good fortune in their lives, the boy could have gone astray as he has no adult around to supervise him; he could have ran away to play while his mummy worked and go back to the library when her mother knocked off. Hence, having good fortune is very important and we should accumulate it via our buddhist practices.

Patient and kind, she shares with me Sensei's guidances and her experiences.

Her motherly nature also makes her more than a leader and I found myself drawn to her.

While we were talking, her son, Qi Jian keep Keane entertained. =)
