My contractions were getting intense and I was admitted to KKH on 11th Nov (4 days earlier than the expected due date). However the gynae on duty (not my appointed gynae) felt that my contractions are not constant enough and decided not to call my gynae. He gave me the option to either admit in the hospital or go home. My hubby suggested that I admit in.
I could not get to sleep because my contractions were on and off.... Julia called my handphone and chanted with me. Finally around 5 plus in the morning of 12th Nov, I was pushed into the delivery suite.
When I was pregnant, many mothers told me not to inject epidural because of its side effects, particularly rheumatism at the spine (epidural is injected in the spine). Not only that, injection of epidural may lead to paralysm. One mother, however, said that she had injected epidural and she did not experience any side effects, and her children are all grown-ups.
As the cons of epidural seen frightening... I decided then that epidural is not an option for me. However on the day of delivery itself, the pain was so overwhelming that I thought I would die!The nurses asked me if I would like to inject epidural and I rejected. Seeing my condition, the nurses commented that my threshold for pain was very low, hence I ought to inject epidural. She also assured that epidural is injected by professionals.
I obliged. I signed (or maybe my hubby did) whatever was given to me. Not long after, I was instructed to lie sideway and curled my body. I was NOT supposed to move too, not even the slightest, because if I did, the injection may go hay-wired, and the consequences will be disastrous. When my contractions stopped, she immediately inject it into my spine.
My lower body was numbed. And I felt no more pain! Although the monitor showed that my contractions were getting more and more intense, I could not feel it! HAHA!
The nurse 'examined' me and asked me to PUSH... PUSH...PUSH. She claimed that I am NOT pushing hard enough. She also said that the numbness I am experiencing could be the reason why I CANNOT push... :(
Fortunately, my gynae came in. He was wondering why the nurses did not call for him. He observed the monitor and told the nurses that my baby's heartbeats were not constant. This is because the umbilical cord was entangled around my baby's neck and hence whenever he tried to come out, he couldn't breathe. My gynae then 'examined' me and said that my baby's head was not facing down but sideway, thuse making it hard for me to push my baby out. He said he need to get my baby out fast. I was quite shocked. The nurse observed the monitor frequently but did not notice that the heartbeats were not constant! She also 'examined' me and did not realised that the head is facing sideway! Instead, she said it was because I did not push hard enough!
My gynae suggested the use of wrigley's forcep to assist my baby out. He made a cut under there and in less than 5 minutes, my baby's out!!
He placed my baby on my stomach and I gave him a peck. Thereafter, they weighed him, measured his length and proceed with all the necessary procedures.
I was glad that my gynae came in instead of waiting for the nurses to 'summon' him. Although I was quite mad with the nurses for giving the wrong dignosis, I must admit that they were indeed very nice and patient. What is more important, my baby is now safe and sound.
